Overseas Study Speech

Eight months has passed in the blink of an eye, yet these months have been anything but ordinary. At the end of August, 2012, I set out to study in theUSand hence embarked on an unforgettable journey.

Oakland University, where I studied, is located in the north ofAmerica, in Michigan State. When I first set foot in Michigan, I remembered how similar my hometown, Changchun, is to this state in population scarcity and the weather. As a northerner, I immediately found myself at home. The American life is generally characterized by a saying, “accomplish all things with one’s best efforts”, and the things vary from big deals such as renting an apartment and studying, to the minute such as taking care of basic daily necessities.

In American universities, students make their own decisions on the arrangement of credit and courses. By the end of a term, the school teachers give you some suggestions regarding the next term. Students can also choose their teachers. It can be said that students are given many rights. In theUS, a majority of the students pay their tuition by working part-time, so it is common to notice that American students are always busy. For students, this is worth learning from.. Classes in theUSare normally much smaller in size, and there are many practical courses and field practice courses available as well as the usual basic courses. Therefore, students are required to allocate their time accordingly and to balance their time well. In theUS, practical course scores account for a large proportion of the total score.

It’s not easy after school either. Teachers will organize the students into groups in class, and call it “teamwork’. Students of a group are supposed to finish a task assigned by the teacher and this will also account for a large proportion of their final score. Additionally, as international students, we need to make appointments with American tutors. To edit our thesis and reports, and this provides great help in improving our English. Actually, one does not need to go to great lengths to practice English here, because it can be practiced through attending lectures, participating in speeches and your vocabulary can also be increased via engaging in daily conversations as long as efforts are made. In fact, English is the only vehicle for communication in our daily lives.

In the following part, I would like to talk about my apartment. If your name is registered with a property, you take the responsibility of the property, and this includes going on your own to pay the water bill, the electricity bill and the property fee and so on. However, students do not deal with these things inChina. Moreover, service fees in theUSare very expensive, thus it is recommended that you try to do things by yourself. If you want to feel more like home, you can buy some Chinese food in the Chinese supermarket in your spare time. The idea of having a hot meal and washed laundry ready when needed is replaced with one of going straight into the kitchen as soon as your schoolbag is put down. Although life here is busy, I realize  that it is very meaningful.

InChina, I often hear people living in theUSsaying that: it is our home on the other side of the ocean. I came to realize the meaning of homesickness when I started to live in theUS. My mind always went back to my school inChina, even though I am studying in Oakland University. As an overseas student, all I can do is to study hard and bring more advanced culture and experience back to my classmates and my juniors. To conclude, I want to express my gratitude to Changchun University of Technology for an unforgettable experience. I also want to tell my fellow students to make efforts in their English studies and other basic courses and that I’ll be here  waiting for you all.
